Ref: Arkansas vs WSU Memorial Knife 22 Oct 1970

I assembled this knife in memory of WSU’s ‘First Game Back’ with Arkansas after the plane crash on 2 Oct 1970 taking 31 lives in Colorado. It is constructed with the following:

1.     The blade is 440-C stainless steel and the guard is nickel silver and comes from Jantz Supply of Sulfur, Oklahoma.

2.     Handle is lined with red vulcanized fiber, mastodon tooth spaced, nickel silver washer and mastodon tusk handle, all held in place with mosaic 1/8” pins and lined thong hole with leather lace and mastodon tusk bead.

3.     The Sterling Silver inlay and guard were engraved by Jim Lowe, Woodbridge, Virginia an engraver for Tiffney.

4.     The Sheath is hand made by me from 9 oz saddle leather and covered with Stingray skin.

5.     The stand is from Oak burl and was supplied by Billy and Rob Peach; it comes from behind the beaver pond at deer camp near Cherryfield, Maine.

This knife was assembled in loving memory of our fellow players, coaches and supporters who lost their lives while flying to Utah to do what we loved, playing football for Wichita State University Shockers and it is given with grateful thanks to the players and coaches from the Arkansas Razorbacks team of 1970 in memory of our ‘First Game Back’ after the tragedy.

Sincerely,

Kelly C. Cook, #72
